Adults

Dance classes are a fantastic way to keep fit and socialise with others while learning new skills in an exciting and supportive environment.

It has been proven that dancing just once a week can lift your spirits and improve your confidence, health and well-being! We believe that all adults should discover the joy that dance brings, which is why we offer a huge variety of styles and cater for absolute beginners through to advanced.

Our adult classes are strictly 18+ with no maximum age. You’re never too old to get started! Dance Habit is an inclusive, welcoming and non-judgemental environment, so you will be made to feel right at home from day one.

Thanks for a wonderful first year at Dance Habit! I was so nervous to come to that first class, but you’ve created such a welcoming and supportive space that I’m currently enrolled in three! I really appreciate how hard you work to bring both joy and education to us, and hope we’re dancing together for many years to come.

What do adults wear to class?

There are no uniform requirements for our adult classes because we’re far more interested in how you feel, than what you look!

As a guide, you might like to wear reasonably fitted clothing that you can move comfortably in - think active wear that feels good on your body. Or, if you’re comfortable in specific dancewear (e.g. a leotard and skirt for ballet), you are very welcome to wear that. The only exception to this is hip hop, where a looser fit of clothing is generally preferred.

We invite you to be present in the room for your class. This may mean tying hair up off the face or removing your smart watch or large jewellery that may distract you.

Depending on your chosen dance style, you may need to purchase dance shoes once you become a member and are attending classes regularly. These are outlined below:

  • Ballet – ballet shoes with elastic (split sole and pink or colour closest to individual skin tone)

  • Jazz and Broadway Jazz – tan jazz shoes (split sole)

  • Tap – black tap shoes

  • Contemporary, Lyrical and Pilates are all bare foot classes.

  • Hip Hop is street dance, so runners/sneakers are good, but nothing with too much grip!

If you are unsure on the style you will choose and don’t yet want to invest in shoes, socks will do for ballet and jazz, and runners for tap or hip hop. You can also check our second-hand box for shoes and feel free to borrow a pair for your trial if you find some that fit!

If you need to purchase dancewear or dance shoes, please visit our friends at Energetiks in Essendon, Bloch in Moonee Ponds or Dancewear Nation in Williamstown.
